This is my grandpa, Papa Jim, (no... it's purely coincidental...) and my Great-Uncle Jess. Papa Jim is a Korean War Veteran. Uncle Jess was a World War II Veteran who passed away last year. This picture was taken the summer before my senior year of high school at my Uncle Jess' home in Sunland, California (a suburb of Los Angeles). These pictures don't show it, but Uncle Jess would build things from the empty beer cans... cool things... like airplanes. I miss Uncle Jess. As you can tell he was pretty cool. I mean... any 70 year old man who can sit outside with a houseful of people in nothing but his underwear has got to be cool - right?
Same place, same day :) This is a picture of my Great Aunt Tommie and my grandmother, Na (Juanita). Tommie was also a World War II Veteran. She is the only woman I've ever seen drink a beer straight out of the can. I miss my Tia too. She passed away a few years after this shot was taken. This was the last time I got to see her.
Wow... and not that I intended for this post to go there... but I just realized that the whole reason my family was even visiting everyone in California during this trip was because it was the first anniversary of my Uncle Jim's passing.
My Great Grandmother, Lola, lived right next door to her brother, my Uncle Jess. I can't remember why I don't have a picture of her from this trip... I wish I did though. Kind of stinks now that I look back and don't have one.
