1:51 PM - Wow ~ Even 100 Years Ago
Category: Life
The battle of shop locally obviously is something that local merchants have had to struggle with for more years than I imagined. Of course, back then they didn't have great stores in NYC that would overnight for free and save you taxes on your purchase... but nonetheless... this ran in The Mountain Mail Newspaper, Salida, Co.:

The Salida Record, Oct. 11, 1907:
A carload of groceries arrived in Salida Tuesday afternoon billed to about twenty different citizens. This is certainly not encouraging home industries and not exhibiting much patriotism for Salida. Salesmen from the Denver houses visit Salida every month and take out orders amounting to something like $500.
If these goods are purchased out of town under the belief that the buyer is saving money, it is up to the Salida merchants to advertise their prices like the Denver houses do and thus convince them of their error. The writer is satisfied that goods can be purchased no cheaper in Denver than in Salida, adding the freight, and this money should circulate at home.
