One of our Favorite Drives

Jim loved the outdoors. He loved fishing, he loved hunting (thanks B for reminding me of the memories that you two made on your last hunting trip together!), he loved the fall. During the fall we'd spend a lot of time driving through GTNP.

It's the prettiest time of year to be up there. There aren't many tourist left... the animals are feeling good and coming down low before the snow... and the elk... the elk are bugling and rutting. We spent hours listening to the big bulls bugle and watching them crash into each other. It's hard to explain the majestic sound that their antlers make when they make contact with another bull. It's almost magical to hear these big animals below out their song. There truly is no other noise like it.

I took this shot after Jim had left one weekend. His typical luck meant that when we drove through the Park together that weekend the animals were all off a ways from the road. I went back through to just get out of the house for the afternoon and these younger bulls were about 50 feet from the road. I called him so he could hear the commotion and then sent him this picture the next day. It's one of our favorites.

Mark,

Thank you so very much for your comments. Jim loved, loved, loved that hunting trip! We all miss him. He brought so much laughter into all our lives that it's hard to believe we will never share that with him again... but we can all share it together... I hope you can make it to the safety meeting :)

He was quite the guy and I can't thank you enough for the friendship you shared with him.

Thanks again,
Tara Ann
