I Win the Award for Worse Traveler...
That being said... when the first part of January came around and United had an awesome deal on flights out of Jackson and directly into Denver I immediately booked my mother's and mine tickets to the arraignments. This time of year travel through Wyoming can be rather difficult. I-80 can and will close at the drop of a hat making it impossible to get to Colorado. And quite honestly, I needed to spend the extra day I would gain by flying doing things like, oh I don't know... working... before I find myself jobless. Flying allowed me to work half a day on the day I flew out and half a day upon my return (although I don't know that I would call anything I did on either day really "working" as it takes an entire different mindset to sit there in the same room with those evil people and I'm pretty much not focused on work the week before and the week after a trip to Canon City).
At any rate, the trip down there this time was particularly exhausting. Mentally I had taken more than my share of punches. Emotionally I remain a wreck at this point and each trip down there seems to only bring me that much closer to the edge of my insanity (don't read into that too far, I am doing this for Jim and will continue to do so until I have seen that justice is brought to both Jim and myself; however, there's no handbook on grieving a loss or circumstance like this so you can only imagine where I'm emotionally at most days... add to that the facts surrounding the case and it's any wonder I leave my house on any given day). Physically I was beyond exhaustion. My mom had spent two nights with the flu keeping everyone on our hotel floors awake, myself included.
So my complete breakdown at 30,000 feet should come as no surprise for anyone. Except for the poor man next to me who already wasn't too friendly or outgoing to begin with.
If you're still with me, kuddos to you. Because I just had to scroll up to remind myself where I was going...
The return flight was obviously eventful. Bursting out in sobs alone would have made it so... but in a true "Tara Moment" it didn't stop there... no. It got better or worse depending on how you look at it...
Our descent into Jackson was not an easy one. We were on a really big plane and there were really big winds and a lot of turbulence. In an effort to advert losing any contents I may have had in my stomach I had made the choice to skip breakfast, but it wasn't helping much at all... so I closed my eyes and started focusing on my deep breaths... when all of a sudden WHOOSH! THE. NOSE. OF. THE. PLAIN. POPPED. UP.
I don't know about you, but I'm okay with side to side turbulence... but when you're plane is supposed to be heading down towards the earth and suddenly you're head is hitting the back of your seat it's going to freak you out... especially if your eyes are closed... so I did what any other person would do...
SCREAMED.
OH.
MY.
GOD.
And it may or may not have been at the top of my lungs... and the poor man next to may or may not have had this horrible look on his face...
But of course my family has made a HUGE deal out of it all week long... it's going to stick like the stupid red rocks from 17 years ago... you know the family joke that even Jim would pick on me about...
So in my defense... here's a copy of the email that United sent me apologizing for such a rough flight:

Here's to hoping you don't end up sitting next to me on my next trip down there.

Spending Quality Time with the Local Sheriffs Department
You. Would. Think.
Not. The. Case.
I've had an antifreeze issue with the truck for some time now... we've replaced belts and hoses and gauges and gaskets. And by we I mean my stepdad ;) It was fixed for awhile (we made it to California with no incident). A couple of days ago I noticed I was low on fluid again... so I filled it up... then a squeaking started... I figured at best that only left the water pump and put it on the list of things to get done during my holiday time off.
I did, however, run into town to pick up some more antifreeze... and then it happened. I heard a clunk and lost my power steering. I figured I'd just lost my power steering. That's no biggie... I learned how to drive in vehicles with no power steering... then the temp gauge started climbing again (and I knew it wasn't because I was low on antifreeze... I had just emptied the latest gallon in)... so I pulled over... and after getting out in the FREEZING cold I discovered that the fan belt had slipped off (which apparently is something that happens when the bearings start to go out in the water pump)... and that the fan had sliced right through the belt so I stood no chance of slipping it back on in the dark of night. That $8 a year I pay for a tow package... THE BEST MONEY I SPEND EVERY YEAR! One call to the number on the back of my card and an assurance of a tow in 90 minutes...
NINETY MINUTES... I asked them if that was the best they could do because it's THIRTEEN degrees out here and I have NO HEAT since I have no way to run the vehicle without causing more damage... and nope... sorry that's the e.t.a.
Lucky for me the nice sheriff's office deputy pulled up to check on me and since it was a slow night and the other two officers on duty didn't need any back up he let me hang out in his truck with him. Awwww... wasn't that sweet? You've got to love a small town. And since I went to school with a third of the deputies at the jail... worked with the wives of a couple of the patrol deputies... and worked for the father of one of the dispatch gals... we had plenty to visit about for NINETY MINUTES...
The tow truck guy was just as nice. He offered to drive me home, but since I don't live in the town proper he couldn't because the company would check the mileage. I felt bad because I didn't have any cash on me so I had nothing to tip him with. When I asked him for his name so that I could send him an envelope later he beamed and declared that his name was, "Santa Claus." Yeah... real sweet...
Luckily after a couple of phone calls I was able to get a hold of a friend to come pick me up at the garage where the truck was towed to... she wanted to drive me to get something to eat before I got home and I told her not to worry about it because I'd started a roast in the crock pot when I ran home for lunch... when I walked in the door I discovered that the house did not smell of roast... because apparently the outlet that I plugged the pot into required the light switch be on to operate... so all I'd managed to do was marinate the roast...
So while I should be thanking God for the three angels he sent my way tonight... what I really want to know is... WHEN IS ENOUGH ENOUGH?????

An Indicator of My Recent State of Emotion
Yesterday afternoon my boss came in to my office as I was wiping my eyes after a yawn. He immediately got the deer in the headlights... oh no... here we go again... look across his face and to his credit asked if I was okay. I told him that for this once I wasn't crying... just yawning... and the deer in the headlights look was replaced with one of utter male relief. I have a great boss who was lucky to raise only girls... and 30 years later he still doesn't know how to handle a crying woman :)
Another "Tara Moment." And just another day in my office.

Auntie Blogging Part Deux
So to pick up where I left off...
Remember when the guys got back from their "joy" ride "around the block" that my brother was giving me crap for being so flustered. What he didn't even realize is that not only was T.J. not wearing the same clothing he had been when daddy left, but Auntie was also "dressed" in a different outfit as well. I say "dressed" because as my brother, Ted, was taunting me I realized that the shirt I had put on( to replace the wet one HIS child had soaked during his bath) was on inside out...
Those in the know would consider this just another Tara moment... and they'd be right...
Ted and the kids left that night to get back to Utah in time for meetings Ted had on Sunday... but not before we had to rip through the house for T.J.'s binkie (why a nearly 2 year old still has a pacifier when they sooooo don't need one is a PET PEEVE of this aunt). It took enlisting the help of Uncle Kidd to find it hanging on a branch in the Christmas tree like an ornament... the same tree Ted had walked past at least 5 times looking for the pacifier... at which point Ted remembers that T.J.'s mother had mentioned he's been hanging his binkie in her tree...
I stuck around and helped clean up... then scuttled off the next morning to come in to the office... partly to try and make back some of the vacation time I'm behind... but mostly because the computers all had some kind of issue or another... so with one day "off" I started a SIXTY hour week... is it any wonder why I spent most of this last Saturday napping...
Here's to the hope of a quieter week... although I don't see that happening just yet either... I'm helping at the food bank tonight... then off to the Bistro for dinner... tomorrow night is girls' night at the movies... and then the week will already be half over!

Copenhagen Dreamin'

One of the songs that Jim loved to listen to and made me stop what I was doing when it would come on to point it out to me has now played three times in one way or another this morning... so I'll leave you with the lyrics...
3 Doors Down
A hundred days have made me older
Since the last time that I saw your pretty face
A thousand lies have made me colder
And I don't think I can look at this the same
But all the miles that separate
Disappear now when I'm dreaming of your face
I'm here without you baby
But you're still on my lonely mind
I think about you baby
And I dream about you all the time
I'm here without you baby
But you're still with me in my dreams
And tonight it's only you and me
The miles just keep rollin'
As the people leave their way to say hello
I've heard this life is overrated
But I hope that it gets better as we go
I'm here without you baby
But you're still on my lonely mind
I think about you baby
And I dream about you all the time
I'm here without you baby
But you're still with me in my dreams
And tonight girl its only you and me
Everything I know, and anywhere I go
It gets hard but it wont take away my love
And when the last one falls
When it's all said and done
It gets hard but it wont take away my love
I'm here without you baby
But you're still on my lonely mind
I think about you baby
And I dream about you all the time
I'm here without you baby
But you're still with me in my dreams
And tonight girl its only you and me

9 Weeks
Today marks nine weeks without your laughter to cheer me on. Nine weeks to the very minute from the last time we sat down to have a meal together. Nine long weeks.
More than once this week I’ve needed my helmet… you would have laughed watching me trying to heat up leftovers the other night. I tried putting them back in the fridge and honestly couldn’t find the buttons to make the damn thing work before I realized it wasn’t the microwave… finally found the right appliance… only to stand there staring at it for a solid two minutes before I could figure out how to work it… don’t laugh yet… it gets better… when I heard the “ding” of the microwave I opened the fridge to take my food out… sadly, I’ve now done this more than once this week… I know you’re somewhere laughing at me as I type this. And I know I should be laughing too, but quite honestly it scares me.
I have felt like I have been in such a haze this entire summer. Pushing forward when I honestly didn’t think I had the strength to walk one more step without you by my side.
I found a couple of other lost souls along the way... they'd lost their owner to cancer last month and needed someone to take them home... I thought they'd help to fill the lonely void around the house... I didn't realize that their five pounds worth of dog would take more real estate in the bed than your 180 pounds of manly man... I thought you hogged the blankets... boy was I wrong :) It's nice to have some pitter-patter noise, but it does not replace what I've really lost...
We've always known that you have the best buddies a guy could ask for... and we were more than right. You'd be so glad to know that hardly a day goes by that I don't hear from one of them. They truly miss you as much as I do... their friendship with me means more than they'll ever know. We are all looking forward to the safety meeting/wake at the end of the month... but then again not many of us need an excuse for a good party and truthfully, what a better excuse than to share memories of the greatest man I've ever known.
I love you Waddles. I miss you more and more with each passing day.
Love,
Tara Ann

Like a Kid in a Candy Store

Alas, it's true... I'm getting old... and going blind. I'm blaming it on years and years and years of working in front of the computer. I can't see for shit. Well that's not totally true, my vision is still a lot better than Mr. Waddles prescription of -6.25 in each eye (yeah, if you look closely those are coke bottles ;) ). But the truth remains, I can't see the screen like I used to.
So imagine my surprise when I logged on today and in the course of my actions accidently clicked on an icon I didn't know existed... the one at the bottom right hand side of the IE window... the one with the nifty little magnifying glass... oh yeah, that's right... THERE'S A ZOOM BUTTON!
Now I can see all the blogs I like to frequent... without squinting!!!! I can't tell you how happy this makes me. I'd say it's like Christmas coming early, only that's tomorrow so it'd be a retarded cliche.
And, yes, Ted, I know... who cares.
Present Wrapping

Something I am not when it comes to present wrapping is anal. I know, hard to imagine, but true nonetheless. In fact I absolutely hate wrapping presents. Sad but true, I've been known to take them to a local gift store and pay to have them wrapped. This time of year I shop only at places that offer wrapping... I even ask at the hunting and fishing store if they'll wrap for me (and sadly, yes, Cole, your uncle Bart does a much better job than me...).
This year I made Jim help wrap. He's almost as anal as the story below... I'm not... Kidd's big present from me was a fiasco and a half to get wrapped... I thought I had it measured right... turns out I screwed up somewhere along the line (probably didn't help that I was trying to accomplish this year's wrapping on a hotel bed...)... not wanting to waste the paper since it was a rather large amount I had the creative genius to wrap the box on a diagnal... not my brightest moment yet... I don't know who was more frustrated... me from trying to get the damn thing wrapped... or Jim from trying to not laugh at me...

Holy shit, shit, shit!!! I reached into my purse this morning to grap a water pill (trying to loose the last little bit of bloat before I meet up with Mr. Waddles this weekend...) and realized that the vial I opened didn't have the pills that looked like a water pill. It contained bright yellow pills. Water pills are tiny and white. Which meant... that the reason the water pill I took on Wednesday afternoon (last week) didn't work was because it wasn't a water pill at all... it was a diazepam... which is a form of valium... (apparently I had a vial left over from my major seizure days). Which then means that combined with the the three Lexapro I took the next day to get through Thanksgiving... would explain why I wasn't feeling anything for the next four days... I was high!!! OMG! I've never been high! But at the same time... I'm hellofa lucky that I didn't overdose

Jim and I were instant messaging this morning and I was obviously trying to do too much at one time...
me: ouch...
me: I just ran into the wall
Jim: are you pretty busy today?
me: damn thing... that's twice in a week
me: I have a ton to do... but I'm pacing myself and multi tasking
Jim: what wall?
me: the one outside my office
me: I dropped the cutting board in the kitchen on my foot this morning too
Jim: you're walking and typing?
me: right across the top of it... in my open toed shoes
me: no... but you type so slow that I had plenty of time to run and check for the revised documents in Bossman's office and make it back before you even noticed I was gone
Jim: ha ha ha
Jim: butthead
me: hence the running into the wall... I was in a hurry to get back
Jim: lol
me: yeah, but I'm your butthead
The "Tara" Moment for the Day
1:57 PM - The "Tara" Moment for the Day
Current mood: chipper

Anyone that truly knows me knows that I can't be trusted to walk and chew gum at the same time. Some days navigating from my office to Bossman's office is almost more than I can handle. I know, I know, I know... it's only like 20 feet away... but there's three doorways, two tables, the typewriter (Tami, that's the thing we used before computers were mainstream), carpet, the copier; you know, office stuff.
Today is no exception. It's cold, miserable, and bleek out. I wore my awesome Ugg boots (see the blog about this time last year...) to keep my feet warm. Only problem is they're a tad bit long in the toe area. I've got issues with most shoes anyway (I have a size ten foot without the long toes to fill the empty space in the shoes between where the ball of my foot ends and the end of the shoe). These shoes seem to be impossible for me to find my exact footing in. I feel like I'm constantly walking around "blind" for lack of a better way to put it. I'll kick things that I had no clue where there or about to be in my way (such as curbs, carpet, small dogs) because in other shoes I'd at least feel the item first.
At any rate, such was the case a few moments ago. I'd nailed the chair next to the typewriter which sent me flailing to catch my balance only to come up in time to kick the door jam in the main hallway before Bossman's office. Of course my natural reaction was, "ouch!" By the time I got to Bossman's door I could hear him snickering... he bravely said, "What's the matter "T," did you run into the wall?"
Yep, should've seen the look on his face when I proudly admited that, "As a matter of fact, yes I did." I don't think that was the answer he was expecting... of course I could be wrong... maybe he was just hoping for my sake that it wasn't going to be my answer :)
Early Onset of Alzheimer's
2:41 PM - Early Onset of Alzheimer's
Current mood: confused
I swear I've completely lost my mind and I'm going to place the blame completely and soley on the eight (8) new gray hairs I discovered on the top of my head last weekend. Long gone are the days where there were simply one or two (apparently when you don't catch the first couple they tend to reproduce at astronomical speeds, some dare say even faster than that of rabbits...).
Anway, I've already digressed, it appears I've completely gone insane. Monday I drove to K-Mart and sat in the parking lot for 30 minutes trying to remember what I needed pick up there. Apparently it's nothing I can't live without because I still have no clue why I was there.
I've been swamped and trying to get back to phone calls... some of you have been on the receiving end (or lack thereof) of that. For that, I am sorry. Unless of course you wouldn't mind a phone call at 3 a.m. (that's generally about the time that I've remembered that I've forgotten to call you back). Truly, if you know me, you know the best way to get ahold of me is by email anyway because then I've got a constant reminder sitting in my inbox that I need to get back to you.
I tried to work on my invoices today... can't find where I wrote my work down... can't remember what I've done for two days... thank God for the search option on the computer... it helps to jog the memory a little... guess I'll make the rest up... sadly, it wouldn't be the first time...
I bought tortillas in January. I finally took them out of the car last weekend. Ewwwww.... I know... but they weren't as bad as you might have imagined... no mold yet... I still chucked them... now I still need tortillas... despite the fact that I spent an hour walking around the grocery store on Tuesday night...
